Preparing your decoy for paint

The foundation of a great paint job lies in proper preparation. Once your decoy is thoroughly sanded, it's time to consider your primer and sealer. The type of paint you choose—oil or acrylic—will dictate the primer you need. For quick drying times and ease of use, acrylic paints are often preferred by many, including us at Griffin Duck Decoy's. We recommend starting with Premier Multi-purpose Primer and Sealer. Apply two coats, sanding lightly between each application for a smooth, even surface. Follow this with Premier Exterior Wall Surface Paint to create a durable base. For any imperfections, plastic wood filler can be used to fill dents and cracks, then hand-paint these areas with four coats of all-white paint.

Applying base colours and feather details

With your decoy properly primed and sealed, you're ready for the exciting part: applying colour. Begin by airbrushing the base colours onto your bird. For detailed feather patterns, stencils can be incredibly useful to outline the feather shapes. Typically, a black outline provides excellent contrast. The paint we use and recommend for its quality and affordability is Deco Art Crafters Acrylic Paint, readily available at your local dollar store. For airbrushing, a Paasche airbrush delivers consistent results. This step is where your decoy truly begins to take on the characteristics of a living bird.

Finishing and protecting your masterpiece

Once your painting is complete, the final step is to vanish and protect your work. A durable finish ensures your decoy withstands the elements and maintains its vibrant colours for years to come. We recommend a premium water-based Minwax Polycrylic Crystal topcoat. For easy application with an airbrush, mix it with a small amount of water to achieve the desired consistency. This protective layer will seal in your colours and give your decoy a professional, long-lasting finish, ready for display or the field.
