This page is dedicated to our Dad, George E Griffin, born 1915 to 1991

His passions were hunting, fishing, gardening, and carving decoys. Fishing on Gan Lake, the St. Lawrence River and his favourite, the Gananoque River, where he spent all or most of his time. Meat on the table, he would say, and laugh. He would tell stories and rhymes all day long. Gumpy and cheerful at times. That was our Dad. Loved his brandy. His Tombstone tells the story.

Early in the 1930s

Hunting trip on the St. Lawrence River: my dad George, Norm Hampton, and Ken Huntley Sr. went hunting ducks late fall. Ken had a skiff with a motor in the middle, plus a hundred decoys. Dad said they went to Little Black Duck Island facing Wolf Island. Man, he said it was cold, put the 100 decoys out before daylight, shaking and shivering for an hour or so, no ducks. Ken says it's too calm; they won't fly. We look to the 40 acres in the sky was black with ducks. Ken says they won't decoy here; they're going to wide open water. The birds turned, and they blocked out the sun; Norm says Oh shit there coming in Ken says, " Wait, there's another bunch behind them. The first group in could not see the decoys for birds. The second bunch comes in, also pushing the decoys onto shore. Ken says, " Shoot, boys, they both had double barrels, 4 shots on the water. Ken stood up with a Model 12 Winchester, 7 shots in the air, ducks falling everywhere. Picked up ducks and decoys, took for hours, on the ride home, Dad said he thought they were going to sink; they had so many ducks. Off to the fox farm to trade ducks for shells.
